PE 1036 - Racquetball (1 Cr.)

Kinesiology, School of (11222) TCED - College of Education and Human Development

Course description

This course introduces students to the fast-paced, high-energy indoor sport of racquetball. Designed for beginners with no prior experience, the course blends lecture-based instruction (25%) with hands-on skill development and gameplay (75%) to expand knowledge and provide a dynamic and accessible entry into the sport.

Students will learn the rules, techniques, and etiquette of racquetball, with a focus on the mechanics of forehand and backhand strokes, as well as a variety of serving techniques, including the drive, lob, and Z serve. Instruction emphasizes strategic play, covering court positioning, serve selection, and in-game decision-making. Students will also be introduced to game variations, including singles, doubles, and cutthroat.

Each class combines group instruction with individual coaching and active gameplay, helping students build hand-eye coordination, agility, footwork, and overall fitness. The course also covers safety protocols and the proper use of equipment. Non-marking indoor athletic shoes and protective eyewear are required for participation.

As part of the broader Physical Education curriculum, this course promotes not only physical skill development but also personal growth and community engagement. Students will participate in activities that foster sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-discipline, supporting a lifelong commitment to physical activity and wellness.

Open to all students eager to learn, move, and grow—no prior experience necessary.

PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course. If you have any questions about your health status, consult a physician for advice. You should also let the instructor know of any pre-existing health conditions before the first day of class and before participating in physical activities.
