PE 1007 - Swimming For Beginners (1 Cr.)
Course description
This beginner-friendly course introduces students to the fundamentals of swimming. Through a combination of instruction, drills, and pool practice, students will learn proper technique in basic strokes, including front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke. The course emphasizes water safety, comfort, and confidence, while also covering introductory diving and water-based fitness exercises.
Students will participate in skill evaluations, short quizzes, and reflective assignments to deepen their understanding of swimming techniques, safety, and etiquette. Topics include stroke mechanics, water safety, and the cultural and health benefits of swimming.
By the end of the course, students will be able to swim safely and effectively using the strokes they’ve learned. No prior experience is required. Students must bring a swimsuit, a towel, and a swim cap; goggles are optional.
As part of the Physical Education curriculum, this course promotes physical fitness, personal growth, and community building through teamwork, sportsmanship, and self-discipline.
PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course. If you have any questions about your health status, consult a physician for advice. You should also inform the instructor of any pre-existing health conditions before the first day of class and before participating in physical activities.
