Kinesiology, School of (11222) TCED - College of Education and Human Development

Course description

This course introduces students to the Olympic sport of foil fencing, emphasizing the foundational techniques, tactics, and principles of the discipline. Designed for beginners, the course blends lecture-based instruction (25%) with hands-on physical training (75%) to provide a well-rounded learning experience.

Students will explore the history and evolution of fencing, as well as the rules, etiquette, and scoring systems specific to foil. Through structured drills and supervised practice, students will develop essential skills, including footwork, bladework, offensive and defensive strategies, and bout management. Emphasis is placed on precision, control, and proper body mechanics.

In addition to technical training, students will participate in physical conditioning exercises designed to enhance agility, coordination, speed, and stamina. Individual and group bouts will offer opportunities to apply learned techniques in a dynamic setting. The course also covers safety protocols, equipment maintenance, injury prevention, and an introduction to refereeing and tournament formats.

As part of the broader Physical Education curriculum, this course supports not only physical skill development but also personal growth and community building. Students will participate in activities that promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-discipline, fostering a lifelong commitment to physical activity and wellness.

No prior experience is required. This course is open to all students who are eager to learn, move, and grow in a supportive and engaging environment.

PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense.
