Course description
This course offers an exciting introduction to saber fencing—one of the three disciplines of modern Olympic fencing. Designed for novices, it provides a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where students can explore the dynamic world of fencing while developing both physical skills and personal growth.
Students will learn the fundamental techniques, tactics, and rules of saber fencing through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, drills, and supervised practice. Instruction includes proper stance, grip, footwork, and blade work, as well as offensive and defensive techniques such as cuts, thrusts, parries, and counterattacks.
Approximately 25% of class time is dedicated to lecture-based learning, covering the history, etiquette, equipment, scoring, and officiating of saber fencing. The remaining 75% focuses on hands-on physical skill development, allowing students to build coordination, agility, and strategic thinking through active participation.
In addition to technical training, the course emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-discipline, fostering a sense of community and supporting a lifelong commitment to health and fitness. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to participate in introductory-level bouts and competitions with confidence and competence.
Classes are open to all students and are designed for those eager to learn, move, and grow. No prior fencing experience is required. All necessary equipment will be provided.
PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course. If you have any questions about your health status, consult a physician for advice. You should also let the instructor know of any pre-existing health conditions before the first day of class and before participating in physical activities.
