This introductory course offers a comprehensive and critical overview of the dynamic field of social work, emphasizing its global dimension and commitment to social justice. Students will delve into the varied dimensions of social work practice, examining its essential roles across local, national, and international settings, while also tracing the historical origins and emergence of the profession. A significant part of the course focuses on understanding the effects of worldwide economic and social oppression, analyzing its impact on diverse populations and communities. We will explore foundational concepts of human behavior and the social environment, review welfare theories, and define central concepts and values of the social work profession.

Critical global issues are woven throughout the course, including examining the social work response to the AIDS epidemic worldwide, discussing the fundamental importance of human rights as a framework for ethical practice, and exploring specific strategies for addressing violence against women. Students will analyze current policies and programs designed to address social problems, alongside specialized practice areas such as health and mental health services and the critical practice of care at the end of the life cycle. This course aims to prepare students with a broad understanding of social work’s professional reach, ethical obligations, and dedication to global advocacy.
