This course is intended for English-speaking learners of Russian with at least two years of Russian language study at the college level, as well as heritage learners who need practice and review in reading and speaking grammatically and stylistically correct Russian. With its strong emphasis on internalizing vocabulary in context, the course aims to help students overcome speaking inhibitions, increase fluency, and advance their lexicon and grammar to a significantly more sophisticated level. The textbook centers around authentic stories by contemporary Russian writers, supplemented by cultural background, various activities, and the treatment of select grammatical points. These stories will not only challenge students to read real Russian, but they will also provide a stimulus for free discussion about social circumstances, human relationships, and moral values reflected in the literature.

Our exploration of the textbook topics will be enhanced by a rich cultural component, which will include the acquaintance of the centuries-old tradition of Russian bard poetry, as well as various genres of Russian music and the history of Russian cuisine.
