Course description

This course explores the social, economic, political, and cultural evolution of European societies in relation to their interactions with the rest of the world from the sixteenth century to the present. The course focuses on pivotal moments and transformations, such as the scientific, industrial, and political revolutions, as well as the emergence of modern ideologies like nationalism, socialism, capitalism, and fascism, and their impact on European overseas expansion and empires. The study of the origins, development, and demise of European empires is central to this course. This approach provides the essential foundation for understanding European history in relation to the wider world, as well as the social and political fabric of contemporary societies.
