GCD 4034 - Molecular Genetics and Genomics (3 Cr.)

Course description

This course will focus on how information contained in the genome is manifested in gene activity, with an emphasis on how gene activity is regulated and how modern molecular methods are used to study genes and gene function. Topics emphasized will include genome-wide comparisons of gene sequence and expression, epigenetic control of gene activity, modification of gene activity by methods including genome editing, and high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies and their applications. The course has no textbook; material to be covered will be in course PowerPoints and in primary and review papers that will be provided on the course website. The final portion of the course will entail student-led presentations in which recent papers will be analyzed in depth by small groups of students and presented to the class.
