GER 3011W - Conversation and Composition (4 Cr.) Writing Intensive

German, Nordic, Slavic & Dutch (10967) TCLA - College of Liberal Arts

Course description

This course moves beyond the four-semester language sequence and prepares you to utilize advanced vocabulary and grammatical structures in order to understand, analyze, and communicate information in both social and academic situations. The course is broken into three units focusing on a range of topics and communicative modes, from expressing opinions and debating to analyzing short stories and biographies. In each unit, we learn grammatical structures that are common in each type of text and important phrases that will help bring your German to the next level! We also read the novel, Tschick by Wolfgang Herrndorf, and watch the film.

This course is writing-intensive. Throughout the course, you will write three essays, and each will go through an extensive feedback process. There will also be shorter writing assignments that will serve as springboards to the longer assignments. However, the course also strives to improve your speaking abilities, and you will be encouraged to speak in every class. Assignments such as a class debate, collaborative dialogues, and tandem conversations will increase your German proficiency level. Instructors in this course aim to provide individualized feedback that will help you make significant gains in your German language abilities. Most of class time is spent working in pairs and small groups on a variety of activities.
