CHLS 3771 - Latina/o/x Social Movements (3 Cr.) Race, Power, and Justice US, Social Sciences
Course description
This course investigates Latina/o/x social movements as a critical response to historical and contemporary systemic inequities. We begin with the 1960s and 70s Chicano Movement and Puerto Rican Movement, specifically the Young Lords. Both movements set the foundation for racial/ethnic pride, a cultural renaissance, and transnational solidarity. The social movements from the 1960s were primarily about the redistribution of power to benefit marginalized communities, including communities of color. At the same time, these movements were heavily rooted in nationalist projects, which isolated some members of the community, particularly Xicanas, Puerto Rican women, undocumented people, and LGBTQ Latina/o/xs.
