With staggering amounts of data generated by people every day, it is impossible to deal with its volume and complexity without powerful software that is specifically dedicated to managing data. A Database Management System (DBMS) is computer software designed to store, organize, search, retrieve, and manage these large collections of data. DBMSs are behind applications allowing you to find your favorite restaurant, they store products and order data for everything you buy online, and manage all aspects of your social media experience.

Since databases are at the heart of today’s information systems, database management knowledge and skills are highly sought and respected across the industry. Learning core database skills will allow you to be able to design a database system and be capable of using Structured Query Language (SQL) to retrieve information from the database.

Through a combination of videos, lecture demos, and exercises, you will learn the principles of relational database design and be able to create basic data models for simple business databases using Structured Query Language (SQL). You will develop competence and acquire practical experience with basic to intermediate SQL query design by working with one specific DBMS (MySQL).
