Course description

Public health is an information-intense enterprise. Surveillance systems provide information on
infectious disease tracking, disease clusters, food-borne outbreaks, and injuries. Registries in public
health contain information on vital statistics such as birth, death, cancer, and immunizations.
Introduction to Public Health Informatics describes these public health information systems, their role
in providing data for decision-making and addressing inequities in health. Key issues in managing this
information effectively, such as data analytics, decision support, data standards, health information
exchange, privacy and security are discussed.
