FREN 3635 - Paris Metro (3 Cr.)

French & Italian (10962) TCLA - College of Liberal Arts

Course description

In this course, we will explore Paris and its inhabitants from social, cultural, linguistic, ideological, and historical perspectives. Questions framing this course include: How do we define Paris and its inhabitants? How is cultural diversity manifested in the city’s peoples, products, practices, and perspectives? To answer these questions, we will critically examine a range of topics (e.g., identity, the arts, religion, city planning, cinema, etc.) through various cultural artifacts and texts produced in and about Paris. In so doing, we will move beyond the myth of Paris as the idealized French city to explore its rich and diverse geographic and multicultural reality.
