FREN 3721 - Consuming French Culture and Cuisine (3 Cr.) Global Perspectives

French & Italian (10962)TCLA - College of Liberal Arts

Course description

This May session class in beautiful Montpellier France aims to explore Brillat-Savarin's notion of "Tell me what you eat and I'll tell you what you are." The course examines, through excursions, readings, and discussion, the relationship of food to culture in a place where food is a privileged cultural medium—one could say almost a national pastime. The seminar is not designed as a gastronomic tour but rather as an introduction to French culture in a particular space and through the foods that it produces; a study of the social contexts in which food is prepared and eaten; and a discussion of the cultural myths and realities embodied in food—in short, how food and Frenchness (francité) are intertwined.
