KIN 3131W - History & Philosophy of Sport & Physical Activity (3 Cr.) Writing Intensive
Kinesiology, School of (11222)
TCED - College of Education and Human Development
Course description
This course explores the ways in which various cultures have participated in and derived meaning from sport and physical activity across time. Students will apply this knowledge to analyze the practical ways in which history and philosophy influence their personal and professional experiences in sport, physical activity, and health promotion contexts. Within this course, you will use writing as a tool for interpreting history and grappling with philosophical issues related to sport and physical activity (e.g., How can we convey the meaningfulness of physical activity to sedentary populations? What constitutes a “level playing field” and is it possible to achieve? Do the Olympics promote unity or division?). History and philosophy are integral to a well-rounded understanding of the field of Kinesiology.
Beyond this course, having strong writing skills will prepare you for your profession. For example, potential employers will be drawn to well-written cover letters and statements of purpose, and clients will appreciate clearly written—and clearly explained—workout plans or exercise prescriptions. In addition, writing in history will enhance your analytical skills to interpret changes and continuity in relation to complex social issues. The course will prepare you to evaluate historical evidence and make connections between the past and the present. You will reflect on how stories are told and—through the writing assignments—you will develop a perspective to tell stories that matter for sport, physical activity, and health promotion. Therefore, you are encouraged to take full advantage of the opportunities and resources that are provided in this course to support your continued growth as a writer.
prereq: Kinesiology Major or Physical Activity and Health Promotion Major
