PE 1057 - Skiing (1 Cr.)
Course description
This course provides students with an exciting introduction to the sport of skiing, focusing on physical fitness, coordination, and an appreciation for outdoor winter recreation. Designed for beginners and those with limited experience, the course offers a safe and supportive environment for developing and refining skiing techniques.
Students will learn and practice essential skills, including proper stance, balance, turning, stopping, and navigating various terrains. Instruction also covers equipment selection and maintenance, slope safety, mountain etiquette, and the fundamentals of skiing culture.
Coursework includes a mix of lectures, demonstrations, and active participation on the slopes.
By the end of the course, students will have gained confidence in their skiing abilities, improved their physical conditioning, and acquired the knowledge needed to continue skiing safely and enjoyably beyond the classroom.
Classes are held at Hyland Hills Ski Area in Bloomington, MN. Students are responsible for their transportation to and from the ski area. Appropriate winter attire is required, including a ski or snowboard jacket, snow pants, gloves or mittens, a hat, and warm socks, as temperatures may drop below zero degrees Fahrenheit. Equipment rental is available at Hyland Hills for a nominal fee (historically around $10 per session), in addition to the course fee.
As part of the broader Physical Education curriculum, this course supports not only physical skill development but also personal growth and community building. Students will engage in activities that promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-discipline, fostering a lifelong commitment to physical activity.
Approximately 25% of class time is dedicated to lecture-based learning, while 75% involves hands-on physical skill development and practice. The course is open to all students and requires no prior skiing experience.
PE classes involve a moderate to high level of energy expenditure and are considered moderately to highly intense. It is recommended that students be aware of their health status and any limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely in the physical activities involved in the course. If you have any questions about your health status, consult a physician for advice. You should also let the instructor know of any pre-existing health conditions before the first day of class and before participating in physical activities.
