Curriculum & Instruction (11197) TCED - College of Education and Human Development

Course description

MTHE 5696 supports the final phase of our licensure program: supervised student teaching/co-teaching of mathematics in the secondary school setting for 13.5 weeks full-time (CI 5925).

Emphasis will be placed on communication skills, effective class leadership and facilitation, transition skills, lesson and unit planning, collaboration with colleagues, and reflective teaching practices. MTHE 5696 employs reading, journal writing, discussion, group/cooperative learning, and lesson/unit planning. You will likely have questions, problems, and successes to share with us over the course of this experience, and we look forward to hearing them and reflecting together on your work in classrooms. You will also have the opportunity to work through your edTPA individually or in small groups.

MTHE 5696 addresses inquiry through discussions with teachers and other teacher candidates regarding population served, philosophies, and practices. Reflection occurs during journal writing and discussion relating to the Minnesota Standards of Effective Practice for Teachers. Inquiry, research, and reflection all occur during review of lessons delivered by the student teacher. Diversity is focused on by critically and purposefully teaching in schools with diverse populations. Professional development is fostered by involvement in faculty meetings and work with cooperating teachers.
