Chicano & Latino Studies (10955) TCLA - College of Liberal Arts

Course description

This course explores Chicana/o/e representation in film by treating films as cultural artifacts that communicate changing ideas about Latinidad. Students study the depictions of the Chicana, Chicano, and Chicane communities as well as these connections to U.S. Latina/o experiences, histories, and cultures in commercial and independent film. The course teaches students to analyze films as texts that construct and challenge popular tropes associated with Latinidad and wider notions about race, class, ethnicity, gender, and national origin. The course explores how putting Latinos behind the camera as creators impacts Chicana/o/e and Latina/o/e representation.
