Course description

This course is designed as an introduction to the fundamental principles of cell biology. We will focus on structures and processes fundamental to cells with a particular emphasis on animal cells. Topics will include molecular and cellular laboratory methods, chromosome structure, DNA replication, regulation of gene expression, membrane structure and function, intracellular transport of molecules and vesicles, inter- and intra-cellular communication, the cytoskeleton and molecular motors, the cell cycle, programmed cell death, cell contacts and the extracellular matrix, cancer cell physiology, and stem cell technology.

prereq: BIOL 1009 or BIOL 1951
*Credit will not be granted if credit has been received for BIOL4004 or GCD4005W.
