CI 5612 - ESL and WL Methods for Multilingual Development (3 Cr.) Online may be available
Course description
This course will provide an introduction to language teaching methods with attention to domains, dimensions, and modalities. The focus will be a bit more on the "how" of teaching, while CI5614 will focus on the "what" and the "why."
Domains of language refer to those that are receptive (listening, viewing, reading), and those that are productive (writing, speaking, representing).
Dimensions of language include discourse, sentence, and word level patterns and features. We will examine how expectations for each dimension vary according to proficiency levels.
Modalities include ways of representing and interacting with information, including print, audio, visual, and kinesthetic. We will also explore learning that is asynchronous, synchronous, and in-person.
Teacher candidates will critically examine and reflect on teaching practices and approaches for language learning in k-12 settings. The integration and application of technology, and the role of AI in language learning will be explored, along with translanguaging as a foundational pedagogical approach.
