Course description

“Backyard Chickens: Science and Practice” is an entirely online course designed to meet the needs of students interested in understanding and/or rearing backyard chickens from scientific and applied perspectives, including daily chores, laws, societal views, public health, and other relevant issues, and motivate them to consider it as a sustainable approach for personal and societal development, and educate them on how to raise chickens wisely in their home/residence premises for fresh food (e.g., meat and eggs). This course, expanded over six key themes: (1) Basic biology and behavior of chickens, (2) Selection of correct breeds to meet your needs, (3) Housing, (4) Nutrition, (5) Management, and (6) Diseases (avian influenza, Salmonella, etc.) as they relate to chickens. Each key theme will have multiple sections that encompass related short videos or PowerPoint lectures, providing fundamental and applied information on backyard/urban chicken rearing. The students need to have an interest in learning about chickens and respond creatively to the curricular work, such as listening/reading/studying weekly online lectures, responding to a short case study assignment and a discussion-critique assignment, a short 5-page essay, and two exams (midterm and final), all delivered online. All of them are independent, right-paced activities!
