Kinesiology, School of (11222) TCED - College of Education and Human Development

Course description

This course provides a general introduction to environmental sustainability through sport. The course examines the science, concepts, and strategies used in the “greening” of sport organizations and the impact sport properties can have on their fans and communities. Modern sport consumers are demanding sustainability from organizations and this course will examine current strategies employed by sport properties. The hallmark activity in this course will be the development and implementation of a green sport initiative in collaboration with Gopher Football/Huntington Bank Stadium. Students will first learn about sustainability through sport. Then, they will work to develop a sustainability blueprint that they will participate in delivering at a sporting event. Finally, students will evaluate the outcomes of that initiative and seek to provide future recommendations to improve sustainability through sport. Upon conclusion of this course, students will be familiar with waste deferral systems including recycling and composting, energy and water conservation, and other green building practices and reporting tools throughout the sport service network. This course is ideal for any undergraduate student with an interest in how sport as a commercial enterprise and social institution can positively impact the environment through sustainability programs.
