PUBH 6582 - Understanding Emergency Management for Healthcare Organizations through Simulation (1 Cr.)

Course description

This course introduces emergency management principles and the broader aspects of decision-making responsibilities for healthcare leaders. The course will use simulation training as a structured approach for practicing potential real-life events in a controlled environment, allowing students to gain exposure and familiarity with logistics and process in advance of high-risk scenarios encountered in practice. The course consists of applying problem solving methodologies in new ways:
● Facilitating a Hospital Incident Command Structure (HICS) to triage issues, solve problems, and facilitate quick decision-making in a simulated case
● Developing business resumption and after-event action plans to stabilize operations and mitigate future risks
● Reflecting on leadership behaviors under stress to gain self-awareness and develop tactics for ongoing personal development
