SW 5204 - Recovery Strategies for Co-occurring Disorders I (3 Cr.) Online may be available
Course description
Using a recovery and illness-management framework, paired with a strengths and person-centered perspective, this course focuses on developing an empirically informed, applied-practice foundation for stage-matched care for individuals with substance use and co-occurring disorders. Students develop competencies to effectively engage people in the early stages of treatment including screening, assessment, and strategies to enhance engagement. Students will demonstrate beginning proficiency in basic motivational interviewing (MI), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychoeducational skills. Focus is given to engaging individuals that are reluctant to receive care and/or address their substance use and mental health challenges. Additional key areas of inquiry include ethical issues relevant to social workers and mental health practitioners engaged in working in substance use with mandated populations as well as an exploration of anti-oppressive practice in substance use treatment practices. Students are also introduced to and practice elements of Enhanced Illness Management and Recovery.
