PHIL 1922 - Can We Be Friends with AI? (3 Cr.) Freshman Seminar

Philosophy Department (10982) TCLA - College of Liberal Arts

Course description

Are relationships with AI (artificial intelligence) any good? Are they good in the same ways as friendships between humans or is there something missing? How much will the answers to these questions change as AI develops and becomes more human or at least more interesting? And what does thinking about relationships with chatbots and other kinds of AI tell us about the value of human friendship? In this seminar, we’ll explore these questions in our discussions of readings from philosophy, science fiction, and computer science. Students will be expected to write weekly reflections on the course material and to participate in a group project.
