This seminar is an invitation to experiment with technology as an artistic medium that extends our senses, sparks our collective imagination, and shapes new modes of participatory culture. In the process of introducing a range of accessible and creative technologies, this seminar also asks us to consider how art and culture influence technology and how technology influences art and culture. Artists have always explored emerging material, electronic, and digital technologies. Their interests and questions have shaped new modes of art and proposed unexpected ways of engaging with technology as a creative cultural medium. This seminar is designed for all students who are interested in the topic and does not depend on prior experience with specific technologies. It will include in-class studio time, individual and collaborative ways of making art, guest artists, visits to local art spaces and to on-campus research sites that introduce innovative imaging, sound, and tactile technologies. The seminar culminates in a group exhibition.
