Completion requirement

The year-long capstone experience provides students with skills in critical evaluation of contemporary art and with the experience needed to build a strong portfolio in contemporary art practice. Both ARTS 5401W and 5407 must be taken concurrently with a 5xxx level course, which will count towards the electives requirement. Students who double major in CLA and choose to complete the capstone requirement in their other CLA major are still required to take the Art BFA capstone.

BFA Capstone I emphasizes collaborative learning through group critiques within the BFA cohort, and helps students prepare for a final BFA Capstone exhibition. The course also provides students with the opportunity to do original research on contemporary artists and relate that experience to their own art practices.

Capstone II is a critique-based seminar that will provide a structured forum for production and critical discussion of student creative work. The course will help students to verbally articulate their ideas, communicate their creative processes, and develop original art work. The course includes one-on-one and group critiques of independently produced creative work culminating in the BFA Thesis Exhibition in the Katherine E. Nash Gallery.
