To achieve training across the discipline and its skills, students must meet the following distribution requirements:
Level Distribution Requirements:
Students may take up to 4 credits of 1xxx-level courses. There is no minimum credit requirement for 1xxx-level courses. In Art History, 1xxx-level courses are appropriate for students at all levels. They are designed to provide a broad survey of thousands of years of visual and material history.
Students may take up to 18 credits of 3xxx-level courses. There is no minimum credit requirement for 3xxx-level courses. In Art History, 3xxx-level courses are appropriate for motivated first-year students and any student in their second year or above. With no prerequisites required, they are designed to introduce students to a specific field of expertise in the discipline (e.g., photography, South Asian art, alternative media, etc.).
Students may take up to 24 credits of 5xxx-level courses. Students must take at least 6 credits of 5xxx-level courses. In Art History, 5xxx-level courses are appropriate for any student in their third year or above. Although no prerequisites are required, they are designed for students to dive deeply into a specialized topic, through rigorous practices of reading, discussion, research, and writing.
Chronological and Geographic Distribution Requirements:
Take at least 3 credits from each of the three historical eras (i.e. 'Era I: Ancient to ca. 1300', 'Era II: ca. 1300 to 1800', and 'Era III: 1800 to present') .
Take at least 3 credits from at least two of the three geographical areas (i.e. 'North America and Europe', 'Middle East and/or Islamic Word', and 'South and/or East Asia').
Complete at least 3 credits of Era I: Ancient to ca. 1300 courses.

ARTH 19xx - Freshman Seminar
Students are required to develop, research, and write a senior capstone paper (approx.15 pages), typically based on work completed in a previous 5xxx-level course. It is recommended that students take their ARTH 5xxx course at least one semester prior to taking ARTH 3971W/V. Students who double major and choose to complete the capstone requirement in their other major may waive the art history BA capstone without replacing the 3 credits.
