Integrated Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree Program
The department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering (CEGE) offers an Integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Program. Students accepted into the integrated program will be guaranteed admission to the Civil Engineering MS program upon completion of the bachelor's program.

Program Description

The Integrated Bachelor of Civil Engineering/Master of Science in Civil Engineering (BCE/MSCE) streamlines the MS application process for our undergraduate students, eliminating the GRE requirement and reducing the number of required letters of recommendation from three to one.

Eligible students (those with a GPA of 3.3 or higher) apply for the program at the end of their third year. Once a student is accepted, the program offers flexibility in fulfilling required courses for both degrees in the last year of study as an undergraduate. Students may apply up to 16 graduate credits, taken during their senior year and charged at the undergraduate tuition rate, toward their Master’s program.

In addition, the program allows students to double-count up to 6 of the 16 graduate-level credits toward both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. The ability to double-count credits makes it possible for a student to complete their combined BE and MS in 5 years. The double–counted credits can only be CEGE 5xxx level courses.

Our program webpage is https://cse.umn.edu/cege/integrated-bachelors-and-masters-programs.

Admission

Students will apply through the Graduate School online application system, including application fee, transcript, statement of purpose, and one letter of recommendation from their undergraduate faculty mentor in CEGE or their research advisor in CEGE if planning on doing a research-based MS (Plan A or Plan B).

Application Decisions

Students will be notified of the outcome of their application via email within a month of the application deadlines for fall and spring. In some cases an admission decision will be put on hold until semester grades are finalized. Students will be notified if their application is on hold.

Application Timing and Deadlines

June 1st is the deadline for fall consideration. August 31st is the deadline for spring consideration. Applications open up in September. Admission can be revoked should the student not successfully complete all the admission requirements.

Eligibility

Students should meet the following requirements:

  • Students must be enrolled in the civil engineering undergraduate program at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus.

  • Students must meet a technical G.P.A. minimum of 3.3. (as defined by the College of Science and Engineering) or they must have a strong recommendation from a CEGE faculty member or instructor.

  • Students apply to an integrated degree program the semester prior to the last year of undergraduate academic study, providing the student one year (two semesters) to complete undergraduate degree requirements and also take graduate level courses.

Degree Progress

Students accepted into the BCE/MSCE IDP should complete and be awarded an undergraduate degree within two semesters of admission to the IDP. They will be guaranteed admission to the Master’s program as long as they complete their BCE and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above in the graduate courses taken while enrolled as an undergraduate. The graduate degree can’t be earned prior to or simultaneously to the awarding of the undergraduate degree. Once enrolled in the graduate program, they must complete a minimum of 12 course credits as a registered graduate student and complete their Master’s program requirements before they are awarded their Master’s degree.

Students admitted to the BCE/MSCE IDP will complete and be awarded an undergraduate degree within 4 years (8 semesters) for New High School (NHS) students and 3 years (6 semesters) for New Advanced Standing (NAS) students. Admission will be revoked if awarding of the undergraduate degree exceeds 4 years for NHS students and 3 years for NAS students.

Credits

A student can apply a total of 16 credits taken during their senior year towards their master’s degree.

  1. The 16 credits should come from graduate level courses (5xxx or 8xxx level courses)

  2. A maximum of 6 of the 16 credits can be double counted towards the bachelor's and master’s degree program and must be CEGE 5xxx level courses

  3. Up to 9 credits of specified 4xxx courses may be applied to the 16 credits which can be transferred to the graduate program

    • 4xxx level courses with equivalency to 5xxx level courses as listed below cannot be used to fulfill requirements for both the undergraduate and graduate program

      • CEGE4115/5115 – Storytelling for Engineers

      • CEGE4211/5211 - Highway Design & Traffic Operations

      • CEGE4214/5214 - Infrastructure Systems Engineering

      • CEGE4516/5516 - Stream Mechanics

      • CEGE4523/5523 - Uncertainty in Climate, Weather, and Hazards: Foundations for Resilient Engineering

Courses that will be used to fulfill Master’s degree requirements must appear in the sub-plan by the tenth day of the semester in which the student is enrolled in the courses. Any final edits or updates to this sub-plan must be reflected on the APAS no later than the last day of instruction in the semester in which the undergraduate degree will be awarded. Courses not in this sub-plan by that time cannot be updated at a later time and, therefore, will not be eligible for use towards the Master’s degree. Please speak with your CEGE faculty mentor for assistance in making updates to your APAS related to your integrated degree program coursework.

Questions about this program can be directed towards the academic program coordinator at cegesps@umn.edu.

Integrated Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree Program
The department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering (CEGE) offers an Integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Program. Students accepted into the integrated program will be guaranteed admission to the Geoengineering MS program upon completion of the bachelor's program.

Program Description

The Integrated Bachelor of Civil Engineering/Master of Science in Geoengineering (BCE/MSGeoE) streamlines the MS application process for our undergraduate students, eliminating the GRE requirement and reducing the number of required letters of recommendation from three to one.

Students accepted into the BCE/MSGeoE IDP should complete and be awarded an undergraduate degree within two semesters of admission to the IDP.

Students admitted to the BCE/MSGeoE IDP will complete and be awarded an undergraduate degree within 4 years (8 semesters) for New High School (NHS) students and 3 years (6 semesters) for New Advanced Standing (NAS) students.

      • CEGE4218/5218 – Methods for Intelligent Transportation Systems

      • CEGE4219/5219 - Air Transportation Systems
