Program learning outcomes

1. Students will learn to understand and deploy the fundamentals of literary scholarship, including close reading, literary historical analysis, concepts of genre, and cultural critique.
2. Through graduate coursework in English, students will become familiar with works of literature in a range of genres and historical periods, as well as interpretive and methodological debates within literary studies.
3. By participating in seminar discussions, presenting scholarly work to a community of their graduate peers, and reading scholarship extensively and intensively, students will learn to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
4. Students will learn to formulate, defend, and cogently articulate original and critically significant arguments about English literature based on thoughtful analysis of primary and secondary materials.
