Program description

Interior design is a professional program accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). Its focus is on the design of the interior environment while improving the quality of life and protecting human health and safety and providing for human welfare. Students study design fundamentals and technology, through theory, process, communication, and research methods, to identify and solve problems related to people and their use of interior space. Students will learn to analyze human behavior to determine a client's functional, aesthetic, social, and psychological needs. They will gain experience designing various interior design typologies, including healthcare, office, educational, residential, hospitality and retail design.

Through this education, students will acquire:
- A foundation in basic design principles;
- An understanding of the complex relationships between individuals and their environments;
- Understandings of the contextual relationship of the site, the building, that extends to and influences its systems at the interior;
- Knowledge of regulations that govern the professional practice of interior design;
- The ability to research user needs and apply findings to problem identification and solutions;
- The understanding of both historical precedent and contemporary design theories;
- Technical knowledge and verbal and visual communication skills;
- An understanding of business issues and professional ethics; and
- A sense of responsibility to society, especially in the use of resources.
