Program learning outcomes
The Linguistics Graduate Program has maintained three student learning outcomes since their adoption by the Graduate Faculty, in consultation with students, in 2014. These are:
1. Scholarly and research skills
The majority of the required coursework is aimed at providing students with foundational
knowledge of the field’s major discoveries, literacy in current theoretical frameworks, and an
ability to think critically about the relationship between empirical findings and theoretical
proposals. This initial component of the program’s coursework is organized into a general
introductory course plus more specific courses on phonology, syntax and semantics. Field
methods classes are intended to familiarize students with ways to conduct research that is
informed by the aforementioned foundational knowledge.
2. Communication for research and teaching
The Linguistics MA program offers many opportunities for students to develop skills in both
written and oral communication related to their research to experts within the field as well as to
non-experts. Students are encouraged to develop their MA research for professional venues, developing their skills in abstract writing, conference presentation, manuscript preparation for publication in conference proceedings, journals or book volumes in the field through coursework, workshops, faculty mentorship as well as participation in department and
interdisciplinary reading groups and departmental talk series.
3. Leadership and collaborative skills in a global context
The Linguistics MA program offers many opportunities for students to develop leadership
and collaborative skills in a global context. Parts of our program have built-in collaborative
elements.
