Students must take six credits of 'research skills' classes in consultation with the advisor. These classes are intended to facilitate students’ own research and/or to enable students to engage with and critically evaluate a broad literature within their chosen subfield of study. Students may also substitute alternative classes not on this list as satisfying the 'skills' requirement, but these substitutions must be approved by their subfield chair in consultation with the director of graduate studies. Upon each student's completion of a qualifying 6 credits, a milestone will be entered by the Graduate Program Coordinator to indicate they have completed the 'research skills' requirement.
Notes:
*Students taking POL 8621 should take this course twice, once per semester, for a total of 4 Credits. Failure to complete both semesters will disqualify the first semester from being used.
*Please note that students may NOT count both POL8106 and POL8107 toward this requirement. For many students, particularly those studying American Politics or Applied Political Methodology, it will be appropriate to count POL8106. Students who arrive with advanced statistics training, however, may NOT enroll in POL8106, in which case they may count POL 8107 towards satisfying this requirement.
