The 23 credit generalist social work curriculum is required for Full Program students.

  • Students should take SW 8010 for 3 credits in fall and 3 credits in spring or 6 credits in summer.

  • Students must complete all generalist courses concurrently with or prior to SW 8010.

  • The above generalist curriculum is waived for advanced standing students, unless required in a student's conditions of admission.

  • Advanced standing students who receive a grade of B- or less in a BSW class that is comparable to one of our generalist classes may be asked to repeat that content in our MSW program.

  • Students admitted as Advanced Standing must complete SW 5053: Advanced Standing Generalist Social Work Review or complete a proficiency exam and earn a minimum score of 80% to have this requirement waived.

This specialization includes courses previously associated with the Clinical Mental Health specialization, Health, Disability and Aging specialization, and the Families and Children specialization. 

The Advanced Direct Practice with Individuals, Families, and Groups (ADP) specialization prepares students for evidence-based and contextually informed practice in assessment, engagement, intervention, and practice evaluation. The ADP curriculum has a strong focus on individuals, families, groups, and organizational systems experiencing significant risk, and prepares students to use advanced practice theories and skills through inclusive and anti-oppressive frameworks. Direct practice social work professionals practice in a variety of settings such as hospitals, primary care clinics, schools, mental health treatment settings, juvenile justice settings, private practice, child welfare, residential care facilities, hospice, and community-based programs. Students gain skills to mediate risk, identify protective factors, and promote resilience for individuals, families and groups.

The Advanced Macro Practice (AMP) with Communities and Systems specialization prepares students to collaborate with groups and communities and serve as catalysts for social justice,  social change, and sustainable development. Utilizing anti-oppressive, power analysis, and community engaged frameworks, students prepare to lead in a variety of roles such as, community organizers, administrators, policy analysts, evaluators, program developers, researchers, and engage in advocacy, education, facilitation, and outreach.
