The Capstone Project is a culmination of the major and should reflect a student’s best work. It is a process of data collection, reading, reflection, collaboration, interpretation, and writing. As the culmination of undergraduate training, each project develops from an interest or specialization deriving from previous courses. Students complete an academic research paper that is at least 15 pages of text and uses a minimum of 8 academic sources.
Students who double major in CLA and choose to complete a capstone requirement of at least 2 credits in their other CLA major may waive the Urban Studies BS capstone, and they do not need to replace the 2 credits.

The Urban Studies Program, within the Department of Geography, Environment, and Society, and the Master of Urban and Regional Planning Program within the Humphrey School of Public Affairs offers an Integrated Degree Program, the Integrated B.A. or B.S. Urban Studies/Master of Urban and Regional Planning (BA-BS URBS/MURP).
The Integrated B.A.-B.S. Urban Studies/Master of Urban and Regional Planning program offers students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in five years. This IDP emphasizes education in urban studies and planning and provides preparation for students wishing to pursue a career in urban planning and other planning-adjacent fields. Students will pursue a coursework-focused Plan C option in the MURP program. Benefits to students of enrolling in the Integrated B.A.-B.S. Urban Studies/Master of Urban and Regional Planning program include: streamlined admission from the undergraduate program to the graduate program (GRE is not required) and flexibility in concurrently enrolling in undergraduate-level and graduate-level courses in the 4th year. At least 9.5 graduate-level credits can be transferred to the graduate program and some additional graduate credits taken as an undergraduate may be waived by the graduate program.
In their fifth year, IDP students will complete 26.5 graduate credits and complete their MURP degree with 36 unique graduate credits. The MURP degree typically requires 48 credits; under the IDP the remaining 12 credits of graduate-level classes taken as an undergraduate will be waived by the MURP program to facilitate the 5-year time to degree.
To most easily account for the 9.5 transfer credits, PA 5205 (4 cr), PA 5042 (2 cr), PA 5043 (2 cr) or PA 5929 (2 cr), and PA 5013 (1.5) will be transferred to the graduate program. Students will have completed 36 graduate credits at the end of the fifth year.
Eligibility for the Integrated B.A.-B.S. Urban Studies/Master of Urban and Regional Planning Program is selective. In addition to being a currently enrolled B.A. or B.S. Urban Studies student at the University of Minnesota, competitive applicants will possess the following at the time of application:
At least 90 undergraduate credits completed or in progress through Spring semester of junior year, and
A 3.5 or higher undergraduate GPA, and
The ability to complete at least 18 graduate level credits during their 4th year in addition to their remaining bachelor's degree requirements.
All applicants to the Integrated Degree Program should follow the same application process as applicants to the master's degree programs. When completing the online application, applicants must confirm they are applying as an undergraduate student interested in being considered for the Integrated Degree Program for the Master of Urban and Regional Planning program.
Students admitted to the Integrated B.A-B.S. Urban Studies/Master of Urban and Regional Planning are expected to complete and be awarded an undergraduate degree within 4 years if entering the university as a freshman and 3 years if entering as a transfer student. Students will complete a minimum of one year as a graduate student before completing master’s program requirements.
