Program Description
The Integrated Degree Program streamlines the path to an MS in Data Science in Operations Research (MSDSOR), a highly valued degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering. This program allows students to specialize in a specific area within this broad field through both undergraduate and graduate coursework while maintaining the rigor of both degrees.
Eligible students apply for the program at the end of their third year. Once a student is accepted, the program offers flexibility in fulfilling required courses for both degrees in the last year of study as an undergraduate. Students may apply graduate credits, taken during their senior year and charged at the undergraduate tuition rate, toward their Master’s program.
Link to Bachelor of Industrial and Systems Engineering degree program.
Link to Masters of Science in Data Science in Operations Research degree program.
The Integrated Degree Program administrative functions that follow will be implemented as described, in alignment with the Integrated Degree Programs Best Practices.
Admission
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the integrated program, a student must:
Applicants must be enrolled as a University of Minnesota Twin Cities student in the Bachelor of Industrial and Systems undergraduate program.
Have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.4 or a strong letter of recommendation from an ISyE faculty member.
Have completed or are in the process of completing the following courses:
IE 1101
IE 2021
IE 3011
IE 3521
IE 3522
IE 4011
IE 4551
Application Timing
Students may apply when they have completed (or are currently enrolled in) the courses required for admission, typically during the spring semester of their junior year. This allows for one full year (two semesters) to finish undergraduate degree requirements while also taking graduate level courses for the MSDSOR.
Students may also apply during the fall of their senior year, provided they have at least one semester remaining to complete the BISyE degree.
Students in the final semester of the BISyE degree are ineligible for the IDP but can apply to the MSDSOR program through the regular Graduate School application process.
Application Procedure
1. To apply to the integrated program, a student must:
Submit the Graduate School application for admission to the MSDSOR program via the university’s Online Admissions System: choose.umn.edu/apply/.
With the exception of the submission deadline, the application process is the same as the ISyE Department’s usual graduate school application process, which is described on the ISyE website here: Apply to the M.S. in Data Science in Operations Research Program.
Student must pay an application fee to the graduate school
Personal Statement is required
Transcript(s) is(are) required
Letters of recommendation are not required unless the cumulative GPA is less than 3.4. In that case, one letter of recommendation from an ISyE faculty member is required.
GRE test scores are not required.
English Language Proficiency documentation is not required.
Application Deadlines
Fall Admission
Opens in December
Application deadline June 15
Spring Admission
Opens in September
Application deadline November 15
Application Review
The ISyE Director of Masters Programs will be responsible for the review of applicants to the Integrated Degree Program.
Application Decisions
Students will be notified of their admission decision via email from the ISyE Graduate Program Coordinator by July 15 for Fall admission, and by December 15 for Spring admission.
Administrative Admission Processing
The ISyE Graduate Program Coordinator will process the student’s graduate school application within Slate.
Once the student has been admitted to the graduate program via Slate, the ISyE Graduate Program Coordinator will add the 08CD student group to PeopleSoft.
The ISyE Graduate Program Coordinator will email the CSE Undergraduate Records team at cserecords@umn.edu and the ISyE Undergraduate advisor at isyeundergrad@umn.edu to ask to have the student’s program plan updated to the BISyE/MSDSOR IDP program plan.
The ISyE Graduate Program Coordinator will activate the student’s graduate student status during their final undergraduate semester, which will allow the student to register as a graduate student for the next term.
Undergraduate Degree Progress
The ISyE Director of Undergraduate Studies and advisors will advise all IDP students on degree planning during their undergraduate education. The ISyE Department requires all undergraduates (including IDP students) to meet once per semester with an ISyE undergraduate advisor for course planning and review of degree requirements. During these advising sessions, the ISyE undergraduate advisor will review the student’s APAS and make any necessary adjustments.
IDP students are encouraged to meet with the ISyE Graduate Program Coordinator if they have questions about the MSDSOR degree program or any other MSDSOR specific questions.
At the beginning of each semester, all IDP undergraduates must notify the ISyE undergraduate advisor regarding which courses the student would like to apply toward the BISyE and which courses they would like applied to only the MSDSOR degree. The ISyE undergraduate advisor will be responsible for moving those courses to the IDP subplan no later than the 10th day of class for the semester.
Students admitted to this IDP will complete and be awarded the undergraduate degree within 4 years (8 semesters) for NHS and 3 years (6 semesters) for NAS students. Admission to the IDP will be revoked if the awarding of this bachelor’s degree exceeds 8 semesters for NHS students and 6 semesters for NAS students.
The BISyE degree must be awarded prior to the beginning of the MSDSOR master’s career. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees cannot be awarded simultaneously.
The CSE Undergraduate Records and Curriculum Team is responsible for clearing the bachelor’s degree.
Graduate Degree Progress
Once enrolled in the master’s degree, students must complete a minimum of one semester as a registered graduate student completing the master’s degree requirements before the awarding of the master’s degree.
Once a student matriculates as a graduate student, the ISyE Graduate Program Coordinator will be responsible for the graduate academic audit, the review of graduate student degree progress and graduate degree clearance. The Director of Masters Programs and the ISyE Graduate Program Coordinator are responsible for graduate student advising.
Credit Transfer
Students can apply a total of 29 credits of 5xxx level or above courses to the master's degree.
Courses at the 4xxx level cannot be used for the graduate program.
Credits for a course cannot be split between the undergraduate degrees, majors, or minors and graduate degree programs.
Credits cannot be (double counted) used for both the undergraduate and graduate degree requirements. This includes credits used for other undergraduate degrees, majors, or minors.
Courses that will be used to fulfill the master’s degree requirements must appear in the undergraduate degree sub-plan by the tenth day of the semester in which the student is enrolled in the courses. Any final edits or updates to this sub-plan must be reflected on the APAS no later than the last day of instruction in the semester in which the undergraduate degree will be awarded. Courses not in this sub-plan by that time cannot be updated later and, therefore, will not be eligible for use towards the master’s degree.
The Graduate Program Coordinator will initiate the Credit Transfer Form and will verify courses with the student. The Director of Masters Programming will sign off on the form and then the Graduate Program Coordinator will submit on behalf of the student.
Curriculum Updates
The ISyE Undergraduate and Graduate Education Committees are responsible for reviewing and approving undergraduate and graduate curriculum updates to courses or programs which impact this IDP.
If changes are made that impact the MOU, then the ISyE Department staff and faculty, including the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Director of Masters Programs, and the ISyE undergraduate advisor, and the graduate program coordinator, will collaborate to make the necessary changes to the MOU.
The ISyE undergraduate advisor and the ISyE graduate program coordinator will update the program in Coursedog when changes and updates are necessary.
