College of Liberal Arts (TCLA) 602 - Doctor of Philosophy

Program description

The PhD in American Indian and Indigenous Studies (AIIS PhD) is an interdisciplinary, interdepartmental program. Grounded in a strong commitment to the worlds, histories, representations, and political struggles of Indigenous peoples locally and globally, the intellectual project of American Indian Studies (AIS) uses interdisciplinary methods of critical inquiry as a means through which doctoral students engage research and scholarship in their major fields of inquiry.

The graduate faculty consists of core American Indian Studies faculty members and graduate faculty members drawn from several departments, such as American Studies, Anthropology, and History in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), Forestry in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS); and Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development (OLPD) in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD).

The PhD is composed of graduate coursework with core and affiliated Indigenous Studies faculty in the Department of American Indian Studies and other departments. Students may also integrate coursework from the Master of Tribal Administration and Governance (MTAG) and the Master of Tribal Resource and Environmental Stewardship (MTRES) programs at the University of Minnesota's Duluth campus.
