Program description
The graduate minor in Parent and Family Education allows students to specialize in both the theory and practice of providing education and support to parents, caregivers, and families in a variety of settings. The fully online minor cuts across disciplines and examines families in various social contexts and institutions, providing students with a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the complex questions and issues facing families today.
With this minor, students will:
● Develop an understanding of family development, parent-child relations, and family perspectives across the life course, including developmental stages and multi-generational contextual factors.
● Expand their knowledge of diversity within and across families regarding composition and structure.
● Hone their skills in facilitating adult groups and working one-on-one with parents/caregivers.
Students wishing to pursue this graduate minor must be currently enrolled in a Master’s program at the University of Minnesota. Students enrolled in the Parent and Family Education MEd, licensure or certificate program are not eligible for the minor. This minor does not lead to a MN teaching license.
