Eligibility Requirements

Students should meet the following requirements at the time of application:

Students must be enrolled in the Aerospace Engineering & Mechanics undergraduate program at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus.
Students must meet a cumulative GPA minimum of 3.5.
Students must submit a viable 1-year plan with their faculty advisor meeting the IDP senior year plan.

Application Timing

Students apply to an integrated degree program the semester prior to the last year of undergraduate academic study, this provides the student with one year (two semesters) to complete undergraduate degree requirements and take graduate level courses.

Application Procedure

Students who wish to apply for admission into the program must submit the following at the end of their junior year (with two semesters remaining before graduation) to the Graduate School:

Completed Graduate School application form.
Necessary application fee.
Original transcripts from post-secondary education institutions.

Application Review

Applications will be reviewed by the Director of Graduate Studies and other senior faculty members as needed. Processing application decisions will be completed by the Graduate Program Coordinator.

Application Decisions

Students will be notified of the outcome of their application via email by June 15th for a fall start.

Undergraduate Degree Progress

Students will meet with their faculty advisor during the spring semester of junior year as required for their undergraduate degree and draft a one-year plan for their senior year.

Students admitted to this IDP will complete and be awarded the undergraduate degree within 4 years (8 semesters) for NHS and 3 years (6 semesters) for NAS students. Admission into the IDP will be revoked if the awarding of this bachelor’s degree exceeds 8 semesters for NHS students and 6 semesters for NAS students.

Credits cannot be double counted (used for both the undergraduate and graduate degree requirements). This includes credits used for other undergraduate degrees, majors, or minors.

Credits for a course cannot be split between the undergraduate degrees, majors, or minors and graduate degree programs.

Courses that will be used to fulfill the master’s degree requirements must appear in the undergraduate degree sub-plan by the tenth day of the semester in which the student is enrolled in the courses. Any final edits or updates to this sub-plan must be reflected on the APAS no later than the last day of instruction in the semester in which the undergraduate degree will be awarded. Courses not in this sub-plan by that time cannot be updated later and, therefore, will not be eligible for use towards the master’s degree.

The associated bachelor’s degree must be awarded prior to the beginning of the master’s career. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees cannot be awarded simultaneously.

Students must obtain approval from the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) if they wish to use courses taken as undergraduates toward their graduate program. Approved exceptions should then be processed in GPAS by the Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC).

The department advisor should review the APAS with the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUGS) to approve any exceptions.

The Transfer Credit from Undergraduate to Graduate Program form should be completed and submitted to the Graduate Program Coordinator by the end of summer before the student begins their graduate program (after completion of their undergraduate degree). The student will be responsible for completing the form and obtaining their undergraduate advisor’s signature.

Admission to the graduate program is guaranteed providing the student meets the following requirements:

Students are guaranteed admission to MS program (1-year post-undergraduate studies) provided they meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 3.5 and have submitted a one-year plan that aligns with IDP senior year plan.

Graduate Degree Progress

Once enrolled in the master’s degree, students must complete a minimum of two semesters (20+ course credits) as a registered graduate student completing the master’s degree requirements before the awarding of the master’s degree.

GPC is responsible for graduate academic audits.
GPC is responsible for reviewing graduate student degree progress.
DGS and GPC are responsible for graduate degree planning and advising
GPC is responsible for graduate degree clearance.

In coordination with the Director of Graduate Studies, the Graduate Program Coordinator will monitor and review the graduate students’ degree progress and conduct annual academic audits. The GPC will also assist students in graduate degree planning and confirm graduate degree clearance.

Approved Integrated Degree Program Course List

Students can apply a maximum of 10 credits taken during their senior year towards their master’s degree. The remaining 20 credits must be completed as an enrolled graduate student.

Students can mix the 10 credits from the approved Integrated Degree Program course list.

The 10 credits should come from graduate level courses (5xxx or 8xxx level courses)
Up to 8 credits of specified 4xxx courses may be applied to the 10 credits which can be transferred to the graduate program

4xxx level courses with equivalency to 5xxx level courses as listed below can be used to fulfil requirements for either the undergraduate and graduate program but not for both programs.
