Description of other application requirements
Some of our areas of specialization require GRE scores to apply. Visit z.umn.edu/PsychGRE for details.
Applications are accepted for fall admission only; the deadline is 11:59 pm EST on December 1 annually. Late applications are not accepted.
A GPA of 3.0 is a minimum guideline but competitive applicants typically have higher GPAs. Competitive applicants will also be well prepared to participate in research, which is the main emphasis of our program.
Applicants identify their proposed area of specialization at the time of application. Application components include a department application, a personal statement, a diversity statement, a CV or resume, three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant's scholarship and research potential, and, for some areas, GRE scores.
International applicants and some domestic applicants whose first language is not English must meet University requirements for English Language Proficiency (ELP). Most international applicants meet this requirement by providing TOEFL iBT or IELTS exam scores (the Department of Psychology does not currently accept other tests, such as DuoLingo). Visit z.umn.edu/psyELP for detailed guidance.
