Program description
The Graduate Minor in Science Communication and Outreach builds on the strengths of the Department of Agricultural Education, Communication, and Marketing (AECM) and the College
of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences. AECM has a strong history of preparing students to connect science with society through its undergraduate program in communication,
education, and marketing, as well as its master’s program that emphasizes advanced study and research in communication, education, and outreach.
Faculty in AECM are nationally recognized for their expertise in agricultural and science communication, evaluation, public engagement, and education. Their research and outreach span pressing issues such as climate change, food security, invasive species, and agricultural innovation. They collaborate broadly across disciplines, linking communication with applied science, policy, and community engagement.
The minor provides graduate students from diverse disciplines with opportunities to develop science communication and outreach expertise. Coursework and applied experiences emphasize
both theory and practice, equipping students with the skills to design, implement, and evaluate strategies that effectively engage stakeholders, policymakers, and the public. This program
complements students’ disciplinary graduate work while enhancing professional preparation and amplifying their ability to create meaningful impact within and beyond academia.
