College of Food, Agri & Natural Resource Sciences (TCOA)602 - Doctor of Philosophy
Program description
Food science applies scientific principles to the manufacture, distribution, marketing, and consumer aspects of food. It draws on disciplines such as chemistry, microbiology, physics, engineering, and nutrition to improve food safety, quality, sustainability, and innovation. Food scientists are engaged in every stage of the food chain—from raw material production to final product development and consumer use.
The Food Science PhD Program offers a rigorous, research-intensive education designed to prepare students for leadership roles in academia, industry, and government. Students engage deeply with advanced coursework, interdisciplinary inquiry, and original research that advances the scientific understanding of food systems.
The program offers two distinct tracks to accommodate students with and without prior academic backgrounds in food science. Both tracks emphasize foundational knowledge, research specialization, and scholarly communication, while providing flexibility to pursue individual research interests within the discipline.
Graduates are equipped with the expertise to drive innovation, address global food challenges, and contribute to the evolving landscape of food science research and education.
