Food Science graduate students must undertake extensive, independent research, resulting in a dissertation that advances knowledge within the food science discipline and prepares them for scholarly and professional leadership roles.

PhD students are required to complete cumulative teaching assistant (TA) appointments of 50% over the course of their doctoral program. This requirement supports professional development in teaching and fosters engagement in the department’s educational activities. This experience provides an opportunity to develop teaching skills and contribute to the department’s instructional mission.

PhD students are required to present a departmental seminar related to their research at least once during their time in the program. This presentation provides an opportunity to share findings with the academic community and gain valuable feedback from faculty and peers.

PhD students must submit and have accepted a first-authored, peer-reviewed paper based on their doctoral research to a journal relevant to their research field before scheduling the final oral examination.
