Language requirement description

Composition: Ph.D. students are required to pass two reading comprehension examinations, which may be completed through the mastery of two research tools/techniques. The research tools/techniques may include, but are not limited to technology, mathematics/statistics, or physics/acoustics/science. All research tools must be approved by the advisor and the director of graduate studies. As an alternative, Ph.D. students may pursue the mastery of two languages. Appropriate languages may include any modern languages besides English and/or the candidate’s native language (certification form required).

Global Creative Studies: Demonstration of reading knowledge in 2 foreign languages; languages appropriate to the research specialization will be acceptable, if they are available for study and testing at the University of Minnesota.

Music Education: No language requirement.

Music Theory: Ph.D. students are required to pass reading comprehension examinations in two foreign languages: German and either French or Italian (certification form required). One of these latter languages may be replaced by a special research technique or collateral field of knowledge at full division and director of graduate studies approval.

Musicology/Ethnomusicology: Ph.D students must demonstrate reading comprehension in one foreign language. For the student selecting an emphasis in Ethnomusicology, a language appropriate to the research specialization will be acceptable, if it is available for study and testing at the University of Minnesota.
